Cedar Waxwings

March 2nd, 2008

Cedar Waxwings have returned to the cul-de-sac at home. They perch, with their high-pitched “tseee” sound, on the bare branches of trees edging the common garden area. There they wait and watch for a quiet moment to fly in a swarm to the pyracantha bushes full of ripe berries.

I’ve been thinking about adding a pyracantha bush to my back yard, in hopes to attract robins and mockingbirds. But I would really love to attract cedar waxwings - that would be awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Great closeup! I saw a large flock (about 45) at my house this weekend too.

Thanks everyone. The group shot was of only about a third to a half of the birds - they perch in more than one tree sometimes. The most awesome sight is seeing them fly in a large flock to the pyracantha bushes, as in this photo taken last year

Beautiful pictures. Just look at them all! They have begun showing up here in Connecticut in much greater populations than they ever did before. I love having them around. They’re soooooooooo pretty!
