Did you get close enough to see if the ringlets appeared to be nectaring on the popcorn flowers? Another photographer documented them nectaring on baby blue eyes, another “not a butterfly flower” and collection records indicate they may nectar on other odd-ball — for butterflies — flowers.

interesting Lyn – good that you e-mailed to let them know the migration had traveled as far south as Figueroa mtn. I do like those painted ladies, and neat you recognized there was some unusual activity in their flight.

Thanks, Mo. There were a lot of people on Figueroa Mountain yesterday to view the poppies and lupines, and I wonder how many realized what was going on. Much of the information he has received has been about butterflies between San Jose and the north Bay areas. Today someone posted on a butterfly forum that the butterflies had arrived in Utah. Quite mind-boggling.

Lynne – I’ve been driving up and down the 101 lately btw SB and San Jose – a new gig driving for dealerships since diversifying is key in this economy – and I have seen lots of these beauties, unfortunately on the radiators of the cars/trucks the team drives.
Thank you for putting the names to the butterflies and for the info on migration.
